March is the month associated with St. Patrick’s Day in the U.S.: the month of all things green, corned beef and cabbage, leprechauns, pots of gold, four-leafed clovers, and luck. To GET LUCKY is an expression often used in English and it is a perfect example of a collocation with GET. The verb GET is an interesting word that has many collocations: today we are looking at GET followed by NOUNS, PREPOSITIONS, and ADJECTIVES.

GET + NOUNS (THAT ARE OBJECTS)

Definition: to obtain, to receive, or to buy.

Examples:

• He got his driver’s license last year. (obtain)
• I got my CAE certificate in the mail today. (receive)
• I got a new car last week. (buy)

GET + NOUNS THAT ARE PLACES/LOCATIONS

Definition: to arrive at a place.

Examples:

• What time are you getting home from work tomorrow?
• We will get to Barcelona at 9.
• We should get there at about 10 am.
• I just got back from Las Vegas.
• I get home from class every day at about 2.

GET + ADJECTIVES 

Definition: to become; to change

Examples:

• I would always get so nervous when I spoke English, but now I just get excited to converse with native speakers.
• When I told her she passed the FCE Exam, she got so excited!
• He gets sick if he reads in the car.
• They got frustrated when the train was late.
• My cat is getting old.
• The sky is getting dark. We should go home.
• It’s getting warmer each day. Spring is definitely here.
• I got depressed when I couldn’t find an internship, but now I’m so happy with my company.
• He got fit after he joined the local gym.

GET + PREPOSITIONS*

Definition: a phrasal verb!

Examples:

• Do you get along with your classmates? (have good relations)
• They got by on very little food and water until they were rescued. (survive)
• We get on the bus on 7th Street and get off in Mission Valley. (board/enter; exit)

*Technically, a preposition is called a “particle” when it is part of a phrasal verb . . . but this is technical grammar language, and not nearly as important as learning phrasal verbs themselves!
