Summer is here! In California, CISL students are enjoying San Diego’s beautiful beaches, San Francisco’s gorgeous parks, and all of the festivals and fairs that come with the season. To celebrate, we have a list of idioms with the word “sun.” Can you incorporate these into your daily English conversations?

Go to bed with the sun

Definition: To stay up late

Example: We went to bed with the sun during our Vegas trip.

There is nothing new under the sun

Definition: everything has been done/experienced before

Example: After surfing, kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling, it seemed like there was nothing new under the sun to do in San Diego. But then I discovered Balboa Park!

Everything under the sun

Definition: everything in the world

Example: I want to do everything under the sun when I am studying in San Francisco!

Make hay while the sun shines

Definition: don’t waste time or be lazy: work hard when you can

Example: I didn’t want to study for my TOEFL test, but I knew I should probably make hay while the sun shines, so I studied . . . while I was laying out on Mission Beach. 🙂

To think the sun rises and sets on someone

Definition: to love and admire someone and think they are the best

Example: I think the sun rises and sets on my Converse teacher. She is incredible!

Happy Summer Solstice to each of our CISL students! We hope you enjoy the longest day of the year in the most beautiful state in the U.S.!
